What is VoIP & How Can It Apply to Internet Marketing?

Filed under: Telecommunications - Patricia Brucoli @ 1:24 pm

VoIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. Great, now what does that mean?

It means talking on your computer, just as if you were on the phone. It means FREE long distance internationally when you ‘dial’ PC to PC via username. All you need is a microphone and speakers

You can use this amazing technology in many ways. Easiest way is to download SKYPE for free, as you see right here on the sidebar of my homepage. Tell your buddies, students, or prospective clients to do the same, exchange contact information and you are all set to communicate with each other. F-R-E-E!

Why is this better than the phone, other than that it is FREE?

Because you can text chat at the same time you are talking - so if you have a URL to show someone, or some other information to give them, you can send the text rather than going ‘h-t-t-p-colon-front slash/front slash/w/w/w/, T as in Tom’, etc. Just send the URL and they can click it right there to go to the site. You can also send them a whole file in minutes! It also saves text chat history so they or you can go back days later and find that information again.

OK, what can VoIP do for internet marketing? Well the big BUZZ is interactive advertising or sometimes called Web2.0 - This is having a site that you can interact in real time with your visitors! Establish relationship (*hello I am here for you), trust (yes I am a real person, not a scary machine) - answer any questions that may help the person take action (purchase) and/or provide additional information.

There are a number of ways you could get VoIP on your site, including Skype, a link to a live chat application, a phone dialer, etc.

As well, the VoIP Web Conference Room is just a boon to mankind. You can get an online conference room for as low as $12 a month - to seat 10 - and all the way up to 300 or more seats - You can invite your partners or prospective clients to chat and show them presentations, or give lectures to your students.

As internet marketers, we need like in any industry to stay abreast of the current trends. While you may use email marketing, viral marketing, and other ‘old school’ techniques, and they are working well for your online business, you might want to start planning to move in to the 21st Century and make your site fully interactive by adding VoIP connectivity!
